Amazon Social Media Policy: What the Agreement Actually Says

The short answer:

Most published guidance on Amazon Associates and social media is a summary of a summary, and much of it is out of date. The program policies were updated April 14, 2026, and one of those changes materially breaks a workflow that thousands of creators were running: purchases referred through any advertisement you paid for — including a boosted social post — are now disqualified from commission, whether or not a prohibited keyword was involved. That's not a ban with a warning attached. Disqualification is silent. You keep posting, the clicks keep registering, and the commissions simply don't accrue.

The Actual Rule

"Most published guidance on Amazon Associates and social media is a summary of a summary, and much of it is out of date. What happens if you break this rule?

  • Silent commission disqualification. The most common outcome and the least visible. Disqualified purchases don't trigger a warning; the sale just doesn't count. Improperly formatted links, redirecting links, and paid-ad referrals all fall here.
  • Termination with forfeiture. Violations of the Participation Requirements are deemed a material breach of the agreement. Termination generally means unpaid accrued commissions go with it.
  • Permanent lockout. This is the part most creators don't know: if Amazon rejects your application for reasons other than unsuitable content, or terminates your account in connection with a violation or abuse, you cannot attempt to rejoin without Amazon's advance authorization. Rejection for unsuitable content is fixable and you can reapply freely. A violation termination is a different category.
  • Withheld commissions for attribution stacking. If Amazon detects you claiming commissions from Associates and another program on the same traffic — by combining or manipulating attribution links — it may withhold commissions and terminate participation.
  • FTC exposure. Section 3(b) of the Participation Requirements makes you solely responsible for compliance with applicable disclosure law, naming the FTC Endorsement Guides directly. Amazon has contractually pushed the regulatory risk onto you.
  • Certification demands. Amazon can require written certification that you've complied, on request. Failure to provide it is itself a material breach.

The Fix: Use a Bridge Page

1

Declare your social accounts, and understand what "your Site" means

You must identify your Sites in your application and keep that information complete, accurate, and up to date. You may not create tagged links for, or display them on, a site that is not your Site. Posting your links in someone else's Facebook group, a subreddit, a forum thread, or a friend's comments section is outside the agreement. Your accounts must also be publicly available. Trademark trap: you may not use "Amazon," "Kindle," any other Amazon mark, or a misspelling of one in a domain, subdomain, tag, username, group name, or other identifier on any social networking site.

2

Meet the original content standard

The April 2026 update added a definition worth reading carefully: original content built on third-party material must contain significant commentary, analysis, or transformation. A repost of a manufacturer's product photo with a caption saying "love this!" is not that.

3

Post the two-part disclosure

Part A — the account-level statement: The Operating Agreement requires this exact sentence displayed clearly and prominently: 'As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.' For social media, this must be associated with your account (bio). Part B — the post-level disclosure: Amazon's guidance accepts short identifiers placed near the link like (paid link), #ad, or #CommissionsEarned. Medium-matching rule: For video, that means saying it out loud and putting it on screen.

4

Format links correctly, every time

Your Associate ID / tag must be a parameter in the URL. Links must be accessed directly from your Site. No cloaking. No obscuring shorteners (you may not use a link shortener in a manner that makes it unclear you are linking to an Amazon Site). Redirecting Links kill commissions. Linking to a list page requires additional original content on your Site relevant to that link.

5

Do not put prices in your posts

You may only display price and availability data if Amazon serves the link containing that data, or you pull it via the Creators API / PA API. A caption reading "only $34.99 right now" is a violation. Also remove references to limited-time promotions as soon as the promotion ends.

6

Understand the paid-advertising rule (the April 2026 change)

Purchases are disqualified when the customer is referred to Amazon through any advertisement that you purchased. Boosting an organic post that contains your affiliate link puts those referrals in the disqualified bucket. The sanctioned exception is the Creator Ads Boost Program.

7

Know the DM and email rule

You may include affiliate links in emails, SMS, and direct messages from your social media Sites — provided those communications are solicited, meaning the recipient opted in. What's prohibited is offline promotion: printed material, ebooks, mailings, attachments, or oral solicitation.

8

Avoid the behaviors that constitute material breach

No incentives. No self-purchases. No links on Amazon itself (reviews, forums). No customer reviews or star ratings displayed on your Site unless obtained through the API. No price tracking functionality. No pop-ups or pop-unders. No browser extensions. No claiming the same traffic for two affiliate programs.

9

Set expectations on tracking windows

The session is 24 hours from the click. If the customer adds to cart within that session, the order can complete up to 89 days later and still qualify. Products must be shipped, streamed or downloaded, and paid for within 180 days of purchase to qualify. Cancellations, returns, and refunds are disqualified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I boost a post that has my Amazon affiliate link in it?
Under the policies effective April 14, 2026, purchases referred through an advertisement you purchased are disqualified from commission — the revision expanded this beyond prohibited-keyword search ads to paid and boosted placements generally. You wouldn't necessarily lose the account, but you'd be paying for traffic that can't pay you back. The Creator Ads Boost Program is the sanctioned route for paid amplification.
Am I allowed to send affiliate links in DMs?
Yes, if the message is solicited — the recipient opted in. That covers comment-to-DM automation where someone asks for the link. It does not cover unsolicited outreach. Offline promotion of any kind, including printed material and oral solicitation, is prohibited outright.
Can I mention the price in my caption?
No, unless Amazon serves the link that displays the price or you're pulling live data through the Creators API / PA API. Prices change, and Amazon's position is that stale prices on your content are misleading. Point to the link for current pricing.
Is "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases" enough on its own?
No — it's one of two requirements. That statement has to be associated with your account (your bio). Individual posts containing links also need a clear near-link disclosure like `(paid link)`, `#ad`, or `#CommissionsEarned`. And for video, the disclosure has to appear in the same medium as the recommendation, which means spoken as well as on screen.
Can I use Bitly or a link shortener?
The prohibition is on shorteners, buttons, or ad placements used in a way that makes it unclear you're linking to Amazon, and on cloaking or obscuring the source of the click. A shortener that hides the Amazon destination or breaks Amazon's ability to see where the click originated is a violation. Read clauses (v) and (w) of Section 6 directly before choosing a tool.
Can I post my links in a Facebook group or on Reddit?
Only on Sites you identified in your application and that you control. The agreement prohibits creating tagged links for, or displaying them on, a site that is not your Site — and requires that your Sites be publicly available. Someone else's group is not your Site, and a private group isn't publicly available.
What happens if my account gets terminated for a violation?
Unpaid accrued commissions are generally forfeited, and you can't rejoin without Amazon's advance authorization, requested through Associates Customer Service. This is distinct from a rejection for unsuitable content, where you can fix the issue and reapply freely.
